meet the critters of Raven House: Doc
Doc is a nubian goat with a sweet demeanor and the most beautiful eyes. He was adopted along with his sister, Kate, when they were just little ones. I met the three goats who originally lived at Raven House in 2006. They are pictured above, Doc (the big guy), Kate (black), and Daphne (beige with horns). They were quite the trio even as adults but I am told as kids they were all over the place. Kate and Doc were inseparable from birth. They never spent a night not touching, even the night that Kate gave birth, Doc stuck his head into the barn so they could touch noses. They were mischievous and playful and loved going for walks and climbing up seemingly unclimbable cliffs and rock piles. Upon leaving her front door open for a bit the care taker at Raven House came in to find both Kate and Doc standing on her water bed as if they had conquered it!
Sadly, Daphne passed away a couple of years ago, and Kate died last Spring from cancer. When I was there after Kate died you could hear Doc out in the goat yard and in the barn "talking" like he did with her. I hate to personify but he seemed to truly mourn the loss of his sister who he had been so close with all their lives. He has bounced back now from that loss and seems to have strengthened his bond with Clyde the burro. Goats are such neat animals and I never would have known had it not been for Raven House.

feeding 30 cats at Raven House
Contrary to our society's treatment of animals in general, life is not cheap! As you might imagine, 30 cats eat a lot of food and decent food is not cheap either. The kitties of Raven House get fresh wet food in the morning and in the evening and have the option of grazing on dry food all day and night. Even the shyest of cats come out at breakfast, they meow, they purr, they rub against one another and groom. It is quite a sweet sight!
As I've said before my husband and I only have 4 cats and one dog yet it seems to me we are always running out of their food and it is always so pricey! When I multiply that by seven and a half it almost blows my mind! The cats eat roughly one case of Friskie's wet food per day, not even counting dry food that is more than $90 per week on wet food alone! This doesn't include the food for the dogs, the burro, the goat, the emu, 15 chickens, 2 turkeys, 10 doves, 10 pigeons, 20 finches, and various wildlife like the deer that come in and snack on chicken food and the hummingbirds that are constantly in search of sugar water.
I hope this helps you understand the scale of need at Raven House. Again, she funds this all out of pocket with just her limited fixed income because she loves and respects these animals where others tossed them aside.
Want to help feed the kitties? Please consider making a donation of $90 for a week's worth of wet food. ANY size donation is sincerely appreciated and absolutely needed, just click the donate button below. Thank you!

meet the critters of Raven House: Kossa
meet the critters of Raven House: Kossa
Kossa arrived at Raven House with his twin brother, Kachina, shortly following their birth. Their mother was lost early on and they were bottled raised with care. They grew up to be big and strong and maintained their kitten-like playfulness. I met these nearly indistinguishable brothers as an inseparable pair. Sadly, last year Kossa lost his brother, Kachina, to a long struggle with feline leukemia.
I'm always surprised at how close so many of the kitties are at Raven House. We only have 4 cats in our home and such closeness seems hard to imagine with my kitties, with 30 cats at Raven House it amazes me that so many can get along so well. They cuddle at meal time and groom one another as they lounge. Kossa seems to take on the role of male-in-charge and keeps the others in line. He loves napping in a peculiar face-plant fashion. He is also usually up for a snuggle as he is ultimately a big ol' lap cat. So many of the Raven House critters are special and sweet but Kossa always strikes me as particularly endearing.

meet the critters of Raven House: PJ and Joey
Have you had the horrible experience of hitting a bird with your car or seeing it happen around you? PJ was hit by a semi on a stretch of Highway 191. The founder of Raven House saw this happen and hopped out to retrieve the injured bird (how many of us would have done this? I am a true animal lover but after seeing that I would have assumed her dead and driven on sadly). Her head had been hit severely but she was alive. She was cared for gently for months, starting to get around better, the feathers on her head started to grow back in, finally able to fly again. She stayed with the doves at Raven House but something was still off.
Along came Joey... the founder ran into a woman at the Walmart in Douglas who was walking around the store with a dove on her shoulder! A conversation starter, for sure. They got to chatting about their love for birds and the woman started talking about Joey, a racing pigeon who wasn't thriving in her environment that she desperately wanted a new home for. He moved to Raven house within a day! PJ and Joey got along amazingly well and got their own large enclosure with a large cylindrical opening for them to come and go as they please. They started a little pigeon family which is now capped at 10. They are incredible to watch circling around the cabin, picking up twigs from the mountain and bringing them back to nest in their space. My favorite thing is to watch them bathing, though admittedly it is a pain to have to change their water as soon as you put it back in! :c) They are lovely creatures and have a soothing call you can hear throughout the cabin. I thought they would fly away with their opening but they seem to love this place as much as I do.

meet the critters of Raven House: Spike
This is Spike, AKA, big turkey lady, AKA Baby Hughey. Rescued as a tiny turklet in early Fall of 2008 she was saved from neglect and a short life ending in an oven. She is a genetically altered turkey, a walking butterball if you will. Her breast is so freakishly large she has trouble walking and has had resulting health issues due to her disproportionate size. She appears to love her second chance at Raven House. She acts as the head of the flock of chickens, pushing everyone around but never too rough and enjoys turkey snuggles (if you pet her under her wings or under her chin she will make a sound like purring and close her eyes, it is the sweetest thing ever!)
