crusted tofu & tartar sauce

I picked up some fish fry coating the other day with this in mind and I am really pleased with the outcome! I just wish I had made more. It gets two thumbs up from James, my husband, too. I smothered mine in tartar sauce, James just had a bit. Both ways, delightful :c) Would be lovely with some coleslaw and a baked potato.

crusted tofu

1 package extra firm tofu (frozen & thawed)

package of oven fried fish coating (cornmeal + corn flour + Mrs. Dash would probably work)

2 tbsp canola oil

  • marinade:

    • 1 cup water
    • 1/2 cup bragg’s liquid aminos (or soy sauce)
    • 1/2 cup lemon juice
    • 1 tbsp spicy mustard
    • 1 tbsp seaweed powder

Dab/press to dry the tofu. Cut the tofu block length wise for two square “steaks”. Mix together marinade and put the tofu steaks in it. Let it marinade for at least an hour – the longer the better!

Preheat the oven to 425 and put ~2tbsp oil in a little baking pan. Put the baked fish fry stuffs on a plate. GENTLY take the tofu out of the marinade and put directly on the coating. Really pack it on, both sides, and put it in the baking dish. Bake for 12 minutes and very gently flip to bake another 12 minutes.

tartar sauce

  • 1/2 cup veganaise
  • 1/2 cup dill relish (partially drained)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp good olive oil
  • a few drops hot sauce
  • 1 tsp dry dill

Mix everything together, cover and chill! Yummy!
